This morning, we awakened to the pitter-pat of rain on the metal roof of our camping shelter. The rain did not deter the birds. Their symphony began just as it did the other mornings...with one lone peeper who was joined by several more and then what sounded like hundreds. It was relaxing just to lay and listen to it all, knowing we couldn't pack the car in the rain.
The gentle spring shower grew to a steady down-beat on the roof above us. Then came the flash and a rumble of thunder. From seemingly nowhere, the north wind picked up and suddenly, it was POURING rain. We packed up all the supplies, bedding and dirty clothes that we could, ate some powdered donuts (you know...the really processed ones in the blue bag that we ONLY eat on camping trips) and drank coffee. It's so infrequently that we have to let go and just, "be." There was absolutely no way we could load the car in the deluge, so we visited, reminisced about our trip and pulled out the Uno cards. Even the 11 year-olds had a great time.
Eventually, the rain cleared up enough that we were able to get things to our vehicle without getting totally drenched. We did have to load the bikes after the rain started up again, but it was actually a blessing. They were muddy from time spent on the trails over the weekend. Just as we left the park, the sun peeked its head out to say good-bye. This trip was a much needed respite from the busy-ness of day to day. I needed the rejuvenation to help me press through this very busy time at school.
Tomorrow, I tackle all the muddy laundry!
